Abstract:
We are interested in discussing citation analysis with respect to e-humanities, including digital libraries that serve humanities scholars. A major question involves the reactions of humanists to citation-based tools in general. We are aware of their common criticisms, many of them justified, but we seek your opinions on where citation databases and tools might be fruitfully applied. As a focal point, we will give some examples from Drexel University’s AuthorWeb, a tool for mapping authors co-cited with a user-supplied seed author in the Arts & Humanities Citation Index during 1988-97. Three different kinds of maps can be created that we think would be useful bibliographic tools in teaching and graduate study. Our handout is for authors co-cited with Thomas Mann, but we can give other examples, and we have also prepared maps for your own Manfred Thaller.
