Description

The Academy project “Text Database and Dictionary of Classic Maya” continues a long tradition of German Mesoamerican research, which was established at the end of the 19th century, by researching the Maya script and language. The aim is to document research into the most important script in pre-Hispanic America, to make the hieroglyphic texts accessible in a database and, on this basis, to compile a dictionary of the Classical Maya language. The Mayan script was used between 300 BC and 1500 AD and comprises hundreds of word and syllable characters that have only been partially deciphered: the text corpus, which consists of over 10,000 text carriers, must be digitally indexed and epigraphically analyzed in order to be fully deciphered.

The CCeH supports the project in the development, programming and implementation of the research portal on the basis of SADE (Scalable Architecture for Digital Editions). SADE is used in the project to publish the text carrier database, text database, character catalog, dictionary, Maya History Database, etc. created in TextGrid and to make the material searchable. The focus of the collaboration between the Mayan office and the CCeH is on portal development for the digital character catalog and other areas of the portal.
